My Newfound Fascination with Human Biology

   By: Dr. Salihu Lukman

As a public health engineer, also known as an environmental engineer, my professional journey has often revolved around understanding how environmental processes—whether natural or anthropogenic—affect human health. However, delving deeply to understand human anatomy (study of the structure and organization of the human body), physiology (study of the normal functions and processes that occur within living organisms), and pathology (study of the changes that occur in the body as a result of disease or injury) was never a path I envisioned for myself. That is until I stumbled upon the fascinating Institute of Human Anatomy YouTube channel. Watching real cadavers and organs being used to explain the marvels of the human body opened my eyes to an entirely new realm of learning, bringing human biology to life in ways I never imagined.

Before this, my curiosity about the human body had already been piqued when I tried to understand diabetology, nutrition, psychology, and psychiatry. In addition, I was learning about gene mutations through the Ultimate Human Podcast with Gary Brecka YouTube channel, which introduced me to conditions like MTHFR and COMT gene mutations and how these genetic quirks can significantly impact physical and mental health. Understanding their remedies is both empowering and life-changing. This exploration laid the groundwork for my current deep dive into human biology.

Humans are undoubtedly the most complex and fascinating beings in existence. Our functions and processes intertwine with the very principles of basic and applied sciences like chemistry, physics, and various engineering disciplines—be it electrical, mechanical, or communications engineering. While I’ve long considered physics the most intriguing subject - apologies to those in the life and social sciences - my recent journey through the practical demonstrations on the Institute of Human Anatomy YouTube channel has completely reshaped my perspective. Human biology - including all other areas related to it - with all its intricacies and connections to broader scientific fields, has now taken its place among the most captivating areas of study for me.

The human body is a masterpiece of nature—its structure, functions, and ailments are all windows into a deeper understanding of life itself. Exploring human biology alongside other sciences, especially physics, not only enriches our intellectual curiosity but also provides invaluable insights for improving our health and well-being. I’m excited about where this journey will lead and look forward to learning more about the wonders of the human body! Join me if you will.
